Microfilm stored under improper conditions can deteriorate, sometimes rapidly, to the point that images are lost or film becomes unusable. The deterioration can occur in the silver halide image itself or in the film base supporting the emulsion layer. Various problems can occur including brittle or cracked film, fungus growth, and microscopic blemishes-often referred to as redox.
The nature and extent of any deterioration present must be determined to find the best method of preserving the information contained on the affected film. Brown toning and duplication are two methods that frequently produce excellent results.
